Lean Agile Coach – Fully Remote

🚀 Be part of a movement to change the way Europe pays
You will be part of our mission at EPI to build and deliver a meaningful European payment solution.
Together, we want to enable a stronger European payment ecosystem by acting as both bridge and builder, delivering a payment solution for consumers across Europe.
💥 Your impact
Our development teams total nearly 100 people spread across Europe. Many of these teams are distributed, newly formed, rapidly growing, and delivering our new payments platform that’s going live this year. We work in an agile way, planning in quarterly time boxes across teams, and working in Scrum within our teams. But with our rapid growth comes mixed agile fluency, and some teams need help getting their day-to-day work to sing.
That’s where you come in. With your consulting background, you’ll coach individual new teams for short periods of 1-3 months to help them charter and establish good working agreements together. You’re not a ScrumMaster – once the team is working well together, you’ll move on to help another team get started.
It comes down to helping single teams establish good working habits around collaboration, delivery, reflecting, and improving. In Klaus Leopold’s Flight Levels model, you’re focusing on Level 1.
✅ If you had joined us last month, here’s what you could have done
- You would have been part of our engaging 2-day “Q2 delivery planning” event alongside the entire team. Throughout these two days, we unite in a virtual setting to strategise and lay down the groundwork for our quarterly plans, empowering us to launch into the new quarter with precision and determination.
🕵🏻♀️ To succeed, you should meet at least 70% of these requirements
- Consulting and training background. This is not a ScrumMaster role. You are coaching many different teams, so you will typically focus on helping a team for 1-3 months before moving on to a different team
- Deep understanding of Scrum, Kanban, and XP, how they work and why, and how to guide a team to select a process that works for them
- Process flexibility. It is more important that you have a deep understanding of Lean principles and can draw from a variety of Lean and Agile methodologies
- Minimum 15 years of experience in software development including:
- at least 5 years as either a software engineer or product manager
- and 5-10 years in Lean/Agile coaching
- Experience in the payment or financial services industry is a plus
🐝 About the team
We’ve got 100 people in 9 distributed teams spread across many European countries, building a payments platform with web and mobile clients. We use the flight levels model to organize our work; plan across teams in quarterly timeboxes (PI planning) and within teams in 2-week sprints.
At the same time, our customers are banks who expect a linear, waterfall plan, so we’re wrestling with that paradox all the time. You’ll partner with ~15 product managers, heads of engineering, product, and design, and our CTPO to guide these teams to transform the way Europe pays.
🪜 If this looks like you, the recruitment steps are:
- A first call with one of our recruiters
- An interview focused on the mission and your expertise
- Possibly, a business case or a tech assessment
- An interview focused on our company skills
- Hopefully, an offer you can’t refuse
⛔ Turn back if …
- You want to focus on a single team as a ScrumMaster or embedded coach (we need you to coach across many teams each year)
- You like to spend your time facilitating Sprint Planning, Backlog Grooming, and the daily Scrum (you need to train the teams to do this)
- You only work with SAFe or Scrum (it’s fine if you’re certified. We even do a version of PI planning. But we need you to help us tailor our ways of working by drawing from many different Lean and Agile methods)
Otherwise apply!
€ Who are we?
The European Payments Initiative has a unique role in bringing together the various players in the payment industry. We are creating an innovative, future-proof payment solution designed to meet the needs of merchants, professionals, charities and other organisations that accept payments and to enhance the everyday lives of consumers in Europe.
We believe that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; EPI acts as a bridge, giving banks and other payment service providers the opportunity to combine innovation efforts and to address shared challenges together. EPI is a catalyst for change, enabling banks, payment service providers, payment gateways and merchants to contribute collectively to the continued strength and resilience of the European Union.
We want to start and grow a new movement with the potential to change the way people across Europe pay in the future.
🫶 Our commitment to equal employment opportunities
EPI offers the same job opportunities to all, without distinction of gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, social status, disability or age. EPI promotes the development of an inclusive work environment that mirrors the diversity of the clients our product is serving.
